For example, you can avoid currency exchange rates by putting all your cash onto a travel money card. These work in much the same way as your actual bank card, minus the fees for conversion.

If you’re worried about your expenses, make sure to keep these top tips in mind. It is ultimately the best place to raise children, in my humble opinion. With so many theme parks, national parks, museums and activities to take your kids to, it’s totally impossible to run out of things to do and explore. There’s also an overabundance of beautiful beaches all throughout, and this is one of the main reasons why most people move here.

Now there are tons of hidden beaches in Southern California, but the one I want to share with you today is literally concealed. We had a hard time finding it the first time we went here, because the beach is obscured by houses and not visible from the road. Now the stairs on the way to the beach is not really 1,000 but it feels like it, especially when you’re climbing back up. There are only around 300 steps and I’d say this will give you a good cardio and leg workout even if you only pass by it once. Also, the fact that this is in Orange County, which is famous for some of the most amazing beaches in the US, make this more of a secret gem than a tourist spot.

This is one of those places where you had to exert effort to get there, both in planning and finishing the long walk up and down the steps. You will see a few people challenging themselves to go up and down several times. It’s a great workout spot, especially since you get to see the spectacular views of the ocean while running up and down. Once you get to the beach, you’ll realize that every step is actually worth it. My wife bought a lightweight blanket with her to lay down on the sand. It was sunny when we went but the cool breeze and the sound of the ocean waves made it the perfect spot to relax, to read a book. I don’t recommend bringing tons of items as this will just make it harder when climbing back up. I also do not recommend taking small kids as the steps are pretty steep and you’ll end up having to carry them as I see most families do.

Unlike the other popular beaches in California like Santa Monica Beach, Newport Beach and Venice Beach, just to mention a few, this is not crowded at all. It looks like most of the people who hang here are locals, maybe the ones who own the beautiful houses in the area, each of them having their own private steps to the beach, enough to make anyone jealous. And they’re not small beach houses, most of them are huge, lavish mansions - another reason to go here. Pretty sights are always a bonus, am I right?

Now the beach I’d say is dramatic because of the rock formations, and most importantly because of the cave at the Southern part. This is such a cool area to explore during low tide, but very dangerous when tides are high, so please be careful. Please note that there’s usually no lifeguard on duty.

So how do you get here?
If you’re driving down Pacific Coast Highway south bound, park at 9th street or along PCH.
The public entrance to the beach is located directly across the street from 9th Street and PCH.

Where to park?
Unfortunately, this beach doesn’t have a dedicated parking. You park on the street but you have to be cautious because there are tons of areas not allowed for public parking. If you’re going during the Summer time, that makes it even more difficult to find a spot. You can also park at the hospital if there are spaces available. Now we’ve been here a few times, and the perfect time for us at least, is to go really early in the morning around 7am or after lunch between 2-3 pm.

You can park in residential areas but please be careful not to park or block in someone’s driveway because streets are regularly patrolled and you will get a ticket. (Free)

You can park in the hospital’s parking lot if there’s any space. (Free)

You can use metered parking at a rate of $1.50 per hour in PCH.

Seattle Travel Guide: 20 Must See Attractions

http://www.mynextflighthome.com/my-blog/seattle-travel-guide-20-must-see-attractions

http://www.mynextflighthome.com/my-blog/seattle-travel-guide-20-must-see-attractions#comments

Pacific Northwest

Seattle

USA

by Gino EvangelistaReady to bask in the splendor of Seattle? It’s our favorite city not just in the US, but in the world. Period. This is where my wife and I plan on staying in the future and our first blog post is actually about Why We Want To Move To Seattle.

Yes, it is a city, an urban jungle, but it’s not as chaotic as Manhattan, NY. The endless beauty of mountain views and charming gardens all scattered throughout balance out the busy lifestyle in the city. We’ve been to Seattle about three times, the first couple of times it was just me and my wife, and the third time we took our son with us. We plan on going back soon so our daughter can see and appreciate what Seattle is all about.

So now, I just want to share with you the top things I recommend whether this is your first Seattle trip or you’re visiting again to see some of the places and attractions you missed the first time.

1. Pike Place Market

Located between Pike and Pine Streets at First Avenue, this is one of the oldest and operating farmers’ markets in the US. You can find anything from the freshest sea foods and produce, to inexpensive bouquet of flowers and gourmet cheeses and organic soaps. There’s not much to do here but there’s a lot to see. The vendors are also friendly and willing to hand you samples of what they have. I first had a taste of chocolate pasta here in Pike Market, and bought a package to take home and it was one of the things I regret, ‘coz I should have bought more! I had no idea how to eat it but my wife knows her way around the kitchen and she prepared it both sweet and savory.

Enjoy exploring the different levels of the market, and you might find someone throwing freshly caught fish right in front of you. And I think that’s always fun.

2. Gum Wall

Just a walking distance from Pike Place Market, Gum Wall is literally a wall covered in used gum that are several inches thick. I took photos just like most of the tourists here and it’s funny the facial expressions people make when they take selfies. You can’t help but just make wacky faces here. Yes, it is gross, but it’s another quirky thing only Seattle can pull off.

3. Argosy Cruises Harbor Tour

This is a one-hour cruise of Elliott Bay and Seattle Harbor which allows you to soak in the breathtaking views of the city skyline. There’s a narrator on board who shares some info about the majestic Cascade and Olympic mountain ranges and the busy shipyards. The narrator we had was one of the most entertaining tour guides we’ve met and it’s the coolest way to learn more about the city’s historic waterfront. There is a bar in the boat and I like the fact that you can stay on the upper deck outside to take photos and also choose to sit inside where it’s cozy and warm. This is just the perfect way for me to spend a relaxing afternoon after walking around the city all day.

4. Fremont Troll

Also known as the Troll Under the Bridge is an unusual statue under the Aurora Bridge that shows him crushing a real, older VW with a California plate. This is not your usual stunning tourist attraction; it’s a fun sculpture that actually made us smile and a reminder how Seattle humor is. Just want to mention that there is no dedicated parking for this attraction so you park wherever there’s space. This is located in a residential area so be mindful of people who live there especially when it comes to parking and all that.

5. Kerry Park During the Day

This is where you want to go to get that iconic Seattle postcard shot. Almost all movies and shows filmed in this city will always have footages in Kerry Park. This is where you can capture the Space Needle, Downtown Seattle, Port of Seattle and the Mt. Rainier in the background.

6. Jose Rizal Park During the Evening
Having lived in the Philippines, I just have to visit this park named after the country’s national hero. This park offers a spectacular view of Downtown Seattle and Elliot Bay both day and night. This is one of the reasons I want to go back to Seattle because it just looks so lovely in the evening and the perfect spot to take those long exposure shots when it’s dark which I didn’t get the last couple of times we’re there.

7. Museum of Pop Culture (MoPop) - Formerly EMP Museum

I haven’t been here in a few years but we had an amazing time last time we went. Exhibits about Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain (we’re Nirvana fans so that’s the main reason we went here) and the biggest names in music particularly Grunge can be found here. And that famous and massive guitar art installation will make any music and guitar enthusiast such as myself swoon. My wife got teary when we were in a section dedicated for Nirvana as it shows some rare footages of their interviews and shows. The first time my wife and I went, she was hesitant to go because she thought she might just get bored. We ended up staying longer than anticipated because she actually enjoyed it. There’s so much history and interesting information to learn. The only thing she didn’t like is the jet simulator. It’s a small, enclosed ride that mimics how a fighter jet maneuvers. I was driving it and it was so thrilling. They have such unique and very interesting glass sculptures you won’t see anywhere. The work of Dale Chihuly is just overwhelmingly beautiful. I’ve seen some of his work in some museums across the country, but this place right here is dedicated just for his craftsmanship, and by God, it did not disappoint. Whether you just discovered him or you’re a long time fan of his work, you will love this studio glass exhibit. I’m actually seeing this more and more in Instagram and I’m not really surprised, considering there’s just so much explosion of colors and intricate patterns and use of glass. But there’s nothing like seeing all the unique pieces in person, it also has a great vibe all throughout which made the experience absolutely incredible.

10. I used to play Grand Theft Auto when I was younger and walking down this street felt like I was in GTA. There were a few crazies we encountered and things got creepy real fast, but that’s what made it fun ‘coz we can just talk and share a good laugh out of it.

2. We always use UberX, the cheapest option, and I don’t know if most residents here really own luxury cars or it was just a coincidence when we were in Miami because we were mostly riding in BMWs, Lexus, Range Rovers and the like and that was really nice.

5. There are many other articles on how to get around Santorini, where to dine, what to do, etc., and you won’t find it here. I know you don’t need convincing or reasons why you need to travel to Santorini, but if you’re looking for inspiration and some Santorini photography to stir your wanderlust, I advise you to keep on reading.

I remember it as if it was yesterday. It was October 2013, my wife Kristine and I were on board a plane to Seattle, Washington. It’s the first time we’re going on a vacation after we had our son, Parker. She’s frantic; the thought of leaving our seven-month old baby for a few days did not sit well on her. I had to persuade her that we need this for ourselves, and for our child. Having a baby is the most rewarding experience anyone could have, but I can’t deny the fact that it’s a lot of work. My wife likes to be prepared; she bought all kinds of baby books as soon as we learned we’re expecting. But nothing, could ever prepare someone for what happens when you have a child, and for the intense emotions you will feel. And her not having a decent sleep for several months because she takes care of our baby while still working full time, I knew then that we just needed a break even just for a few days.

Back on that plane, I was trying to reassure her that everything will be fine. The pain on her chest did not help. She’s still breastfeeding then and the last time she did was five hours ago at home. For those who don’t know, it is quite painful for lactating mothers if they haven’t nursed their baby in a while. The only way to get relief from engorgement based on my wife’s experience was to nurse our baby or pump. I suggested for her to do the latter in the lavatory and she said she didn’t want to contaminate her sterilized breast pumps so she decided to just suck it up and wait ‘til we land in Seattle so she can do it in our hotel. She asked the flight attendant for vodka and pineapple juice to calm her down. She’s going to pump and dump her milk anyway for the entire duration of our trip so it doesn’t make a difference if she drinks now.

While waiting for her drink, she grabbed the magazine in front of her and on the first page was a gorgeous picture of white buildings perched on cliffs by the ocean. I think I’ve seen it before but I’m not really sure where that is. I was thinking it must be in Europe. For the next several minutes, she had her face buried in that article. When she finally put the magazine down, she started talking non-stop about this island in Greece in the Cyclades. You know when you learned something good and you can’t stop talking about it because you’re too thrilled about that discovery? That’s how she was. The place is called Santorini and that’s how it all started.

We’ve been traveling within the US to celebrate special occasions and going to Santorini is a big deal for us so it took us some time to actually make it happen. There were tons of planning, mostly saving involve but we were determined to push it through. October 2016, three years after we first talked about it, we embarked on this life changing experience. So without further ado, here are the reasons why going to Santorini is the best vacation my wife and I have been to.

We didn’t do anything in Santorini, other than relax.

There were trips we felt as if we’re always running. When we first started traveling together, we made it a point to see all the famous attractions in the city we’re visiting, which isn’t really bad, but it can be exhausting sometimes. When we planned to go to Santorini to celebrate our wedding anniversary last year, we decided we just want to unwind. Kristine doesn’t want to have a tight Santorini itinerary. She told me she just want to mostly enjoy the beauty of this island and not worry about waking up too early to do tons of activities, and that is exactly what we did.

The only thing we wanted to do was to sail the Aegean Sea – which we didn’t even book in advance. This turned out to be a very good decision according to the hotel manager because sudden weather changes can sometimes result to canceled sailing trips.

Since we didn’t really have a planned itinerary, we had all the time to just walk and explore the island. I love that feeling of not having to constantly check on my watch to make sure we’re right on schedule. I can do whatever I want, when I want to and this is one of the reasons why Santorini is the best vacation I’ve ever had.

The scenery is better than pictures

Have you ever been somewhere and got disappointed because the photos you saw online looked more appealing than seeing them in person? I can tell you this is something you won’t experience in Santorini. Anyone visiting will be charmed by the small villages positioned on top of the escalading cliffs adorned with blocks of houses coated with the whitest paints. And those blue accents and domes that give the iconic Santorini money shot is something all of us should be able to see at least once in our lifetime.

I honestly feel guilty not being able to depict the beauty of this island with my average writing skills, but I’m hoping the photos I took can somehow compromise my lack of eloquence. I enjoyed walking around the island and just soaking in its warm, ethereal beauty. But I won’t lie, I was equally delighted to take photos as well. Everywhere you look is just a great scene for photography. I don’t think I took one single bad shot in this island, not because I’m a good photographer, but because the panoramic sea views and white-washed buildings, especially during sunset can easily make even amateurs capture that postcard winning shot.

Sunset in Santorini is nothing you’ve ever seen.

I always hear how great sunset is in this part of the world. When they said Santorini has the most beautiful sunset, they weren’t kidding.

As the sun made its descent, the sky put on a color display of orange, yellow, blue, pink, purple and red. That final luminescence turned the white houses into subtle hues of pink and orange against the deep azure water. And then one by one, you see those houses lit up as residents turned on their lights for the evening. When the sun became that one small dot sinking into the ocean, an uproar would ensue, followed by clapping of hands. It’s quite a performance actually, and we had the front row seat to that ravishing show in the sky.

Seeing the sunset from our room was spectacular, but I think the best part of the island to catch a sunset is in Oia, the northern part of the island. I just want to give you a heads up that tourists come here as early as 4pm so they can save a good spot. Although there’s nothing like seeing it in person, prepare your camera to take snapshots of one of the best sunsets you’ll see in your life. And where else on earth can you experience a rousing round of applause as the sun makes it final descent?

It oozes romance.

This is one of those places to take your special someone because everything about it screams honeymoon. I guess you can still go as a solo traveler or with friends and family, but I highly recommend Santorini to celebrate special occasions with your partner. Year after year, this island has remained as one of the top honeymoon destinations. Those breathtaking caldera and idyllic sunset views as well as the unending options for candle light dinner will make anyone swoon.

Happy wife, happy life.

This overused expression did not just come out. This is not a myth and this is not a phrase to emasculate men. It is the truth (at least for me), and I live by it. I know not everyone will agree when I say, “Make sure your wife is pleased and you can always guarantee she’ll give you a blissful life.” Of course a person with poor disposition is a different story. You can’t be a miracle cure for your partner if she has underlying issues that are unresponsive to outside force like your effort to make her happy.

Last year, I originally wanted to visit Japan, but Kristine has always wanted to see Santorini. We kept going back and forth on this. Ever since she saw it in a magazine, she always tells me that it’s her dream to go there. Finally, it dawned on me that she wanted to go to Santorini more than I’d like to visit Japan and there’s no reason why we should go somewhere else. It made me realize that there are things you would do not for yourself, but for your loved ones, and that there’s nothing wrong with it.

I read someone said this Happy Wife, Happy Life maxim is not sustainable because all you’re creating is a barter system. And I beg to disagree. When you put your wife’s needs and wants ahead of your own, you make her recognize your true value - that you are there to provide her deepest needs, and you are her greatest support system. Naturally, she would then want to do the same thing for you, sometimes even more. And then you create an unending cycle of giving and loving. And suddenly it’s no longer about returning the favor because your partner did something nice, but about making sure your partner is satisfied and happy because you simply just want her to be.

No one has a perfect relationship, but after this trip, every aspect of our marriage has become 10x better. She tells everyone how I make her dreams come true, but really it’s the other way around.

Dreams don’t have to stay dreams.

This trip just made us realize this is what we want to do. We want to travel the world, and visiting other countries is possible if you put your mind to it. It’s the catalyst that made me understand that dreams don’t have to stay dreams. Before this Santorini vacation, my wife and I have this mentality that our traveling is only limited to the continental USA. We thought going abroad is not so much of an option because of financial responsibilities like house payments, bills, and now kids. But when we planned to go to Santorini, we made a conscious effort to make this possible.

We didn’t have a few thousands dollars just laying around. We had to actually work for it. For several months, we took on side gigs, and we pinched every penny to make sure we can fund this trip. Budgeting is the name of the game, and I can’t thank my wife hard enough because she made sure we stayed on top of it. We were able to splurge on this trip because of the sacrifices we had to do back home.

When I was relishing that world famous landscape of white washed buildings and royal blue domes set in the deep blue Aegean Sea, I got that satisfaction knowing that this sweet view I was enjoying right from our room was something we worked hard for. On our first night in Santorini, my wife and I watched that celebrated sunset while enjoying Vinsanto from our balcony. I’ll never forget it when she said, “We are here, because we earned it.”

Now almost a year of visiting this island, the memories still linger. Seeing and experiencing Santorini is a dream. You don’t believe me? I guess pictures speak louder than words.

<div class="wsite-image wsite-image-border-none" This was also the perfect opportunity to show my then two-year old the beauty of the tropical islands. My wife and I were originally planning on visiting Palawan but we decided that tons of island hopping might be too much for our toddler.

The Philippines is an archipelago made of up more than 7,000 islands, and it is world renowned for the most beautiful beaches you’ll ever see. After going back and forth deciding which island to visit, we agreed to Bohol, which is one of the main islands in the Central Visayas Region. We wanted to do a lot of sight seeing and enjoy kid-friendly activities and Bohol fits the bill. During this trip, we also decided to hire a tour guide which made our vacation much more fun and relaxing.

I highly recommend doing the Countryside Day Tour on your first day which will take around 6-8 hours to complete. When traveling to Bohol by air, please make sure you take the earliest flight of the day so you’ll get to Tagbilaran Airport in the morning. Arriving in Bohol early is important so you’ll have enough time to enjoy all the tourist attractions in your Bohol Day Tour.

Day 1

Our flight from Manila departed at 6:00 am. We arrived in Tagbilaran (Bohol’s capital) before 8:00 am and our driver/tour guide was already waiting for us when we landed at the airport. The Tagbilaran Airport is pretty small so you’ll have an easy time finding the person who’s supposed to meet you. If you have no plans hiring someone ahead of time, there will be taxis at the airport to take you to your hotel or wherever it is you need to go.

1. In 2013, an earthquake with a 7.5 magnitude struck Bohol and its surrounding area causing great damage to the Baclayon Church. This is being continuously rehabilitated for both locals who come here for worship and for tourists who visit the area as an attraction.

2. River Cruise Floating Restaurant

A really relaxing cruise to what looks like an Amazon river in Loboc. There’s a performer on the boat to entertain you the entire ride and the boat will also stop at a riverbank so guests can watch performers showcase traditional song and dance. Audience participation was also encouraged. During the cruise, you will also see locales swimming in the river. You will be served traditional Filipino food buffet-style. I’d say the food is average, but it didn’t matter because we came here for the river cruise experience, and being able to eat lunch while on board was nice so we didn’t have to make another stop to eat somewhere during our day tour. They served water and iced tea, but they made it using the cheap, powder mix. This is actually a pretty common drink in the Philippines but just want to notate here for tourists coming from the USA and other parts of the world that it’s not the usual brewed iced tea you know and love. Please remember that they appreciate tips.

3. Our tour guide took us to some amazing lookouts, allowing us to take great snapshots of these unique rolling hills. The hills change their colors depending on the season. We went on April and they have their famous chocolate color which is what I was hoping to see. But I must say that riding the ATV is the best way to explore Chocolate Hills. Just let your tour guide know if this is something you want to do and he will bring you to an ATV rental center.

4. The Tarsier Sanctuary

Tarsiers are the world’s smallest primates known to be nocturnal in nature. This one I saw is about 4 inches long. Tarsier is actually what inspired Steven Spielberg when he created E.T. While we were there, we were advised not to get too close to these cute creatures and to never poke nor touch them. We also have to make sure our camera’s flash is turned off if we plan on taking pictures. One interesting fact I learned about tarsiers is that they will commit suicide by holding their breath or banging their head on a tree if they’re too stressed out. My wife got really worried upon learning that but it’s still good information to know so tourists can be more respectful. This is the best time to utilize the zoom feature of your camera so you can still take good shots without getting too close.

5. Bohol Manmade Forest

It was rather hot when we went to Bohol, so stopping by in this man made forest was a sweet treat to cool down. It is very well shaded and a nice area to take some great photos and breathe in some cool, fresh air. As for the scenery, I think it looks just ok, not really mind-blowing, especially if you’re an outdoorsy type of person who’ve seen tons of other forests. But what made this place special is the fact that volunteers all planted these trees more than 50 years ago as part of the reforestation project. Just the thought of that made me feel really good on how much of a difference people can do if they really want to rehabilitate, save and protect nature. And how something beautiful can always come out with persistence, dedication and hard work. A word of caution: Please be careful when taking pictures. Be considerate of vehicles passing by. We were able to take pictures in the middle of the road because not many cars were passing when we went and there were other people in our party who were on the lookout on both ends of the road to warn us of any approaching vehicle.

6. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and he was funny too so it was a unique experience. My son learned a lot about butterflies because of this trip and up to this point, he still remembers all the cool trivia about them. Our tour guide also helped us take some cool photos as nice remembrance for this trip. We were initially thinking of skipping this during our Bohol countryside day tour because we’ve been to other Butterfly Gardens, but I’m so glad we didn’t. You can swing by and be done in 10-20 minutes and have a great experience in that short amount of time.

7. They are packed in small cages and just look sad and depressed. I honestly don’t recommend this zoo in Bohol. Have I known about the living conditions of the animals here, I would have asked our tour guide to just skip this. It’s just not worth the visit for me.

Day 2

1. We were dropped off at the Panglao Beach, one of the most famous beaches in Bohol. From there we boarded a bangka, which is the common wooden boat in the Philippines. Most fishermen use a bigger variation of what we had but for people who hasn’t seen a bangka, it is very similar to a big outrigger canoe and it is usually motorized.

Having been to SeaWorld in San Diego and other aquariums housing dolphins, it’s a breath of fresh air to be able to see these wonderful creatures in their natural environment. I wasn’t able to take a lot of great pictures because once they surfaced the water, the best thing to do was just enjoy the moment and appreciate all these fine dolphins surrounding us. It was a sight to behold and I recommend this to anyone going to Bohol.

After dolphin watching, our boat took us to Balicasag Island, a very small island famous for snorkeling and deep diving. We reached the beach and our group of six transferred to two smaller bangka. I asked why we had to change boats, and the tour guides said the snorkeling spot is a fish sanctuary that doesn’t allow bigger motorized boats. We had to row the smaller boats since they don’t have motors and it’s actually a good work out if you ask me.

Once we got to the snorkeling area, we enjoyed all the fishes, coral reefs and of course, sea turtles. Our boat guides also took us less than 100 meters from the fish sanctuary to see some giant clams. My brother in law Neil is a deep diver and he very much enjoyed this spot.

After snorkeling and swimming with the turtles, we went back to the beach and enjoyed a very nice late lunch on the shore. We ate at a sari-sari store which is somewhat similar to a bigger convenience store in the US. Every neighborhood in the Philippines has a sari-sari store and this one in particular also serve made to order food for the tourists. They have Monobloc chairs and tables outside of their store and they will ask if you want to eat there. If you do, they will hand you their menus. They offer Filipino food and if you’ve had it, you know it will be bursting with flavors. The food is superb, not the restaurant type where it’s all fancy and all that, but the kind of food mom or grandma makes at home. I think this is the most authentic way of showing tourists what it’s like to eat like a local. They have pork, beef, chicken, seafood and vegetables entrees. We ordered traditional breakfast plates which have garlic fried rice, sunny side up eggs, longganisa (sweet version of pork sausages in the US marinated with garlic and other spices), tapa (cured beef marinated in soy sauce, pepper and other spices) and corned beef. We also decided to order other Filipino specialties such as adobong pusit (Squid cooked in soy sauce and vinegar mixture), buttered shrimp, chopsuey (sauteed mixed veggies) and inihaw na liempo (grilled pork belly marinated in soy sauce, lemon, ground black pepper and garlic). I’d say we ordered a lot for six people but it only costs us around $30 including drinks.

2. This is the first time we’ve been to a sand bar and it’s better than I’ve imagined. All of us were just having so much fun swimming and playing in the sand, most especially my son. He didn’t want to leave the islands at all.

It was low tide when we went to these two locations so the powdery white sand is definitely on full display. So what’s the difference between these two? The first thing I noticed is that Virgin Island has a lot of vendors selling jewelries, pearls and fresh seafood that they can cook for you. It is a public resort open everyday and this is actually what is already paid in our Bohol tour package.

Isola Di Francesco on the other hand is a private resort named after Saint Padre Pio whose original name is Francesco Frogione. It is free to the public but there’s really no telling when they are open. I know some people who have been to Bohol but they told me that when they went, Isola Di Francesco was closed. Approaching this island, you would see floating buoys around it, and our boat guides told us they are there to mark the swimming areas, and to limit boats from anchoring inside the buoys. We were dropped off at the beach and our bangka went several meters away to their designated parking area.

We started exploring the island and were actually surprised that this is not just a sandbar. There’s a golden statue of St. Pio, a mini museum, a visitor center, and a small store where you can buy souvenirs and refreshments. They also had a man made grove outside the museum if you want to stay in the shade. But staying in the shade is not why we went here, and that’s why we didn’t really spend a lot of time in this part of the island.

We stayed in the sand bar for a couple of hours just running around, and swimming the crystal clear water. The water is warm which made it very relaxing, and this is the main difference between beaches in the Philippines and California. Swimming during the summertime in Southern California is comfortable but water won’t be warm. Even on high temperatures at the beach, there will be that initial cold shock when you first get in the water, which is something you will never experience in the Philippines, particularly not in Bohol.

Pro tip: Wear sunscreen and reapply every couple of hours and bring sunglasses. We went there when the sun was the highest and the fine white sand just reflects harsh sunlight.

Day 3
We had a more relaxed schedule for our third day in Bohol.

1. This museum has the most shells I’ve seen and the staff was very knowledgeable in explaining the different kinds of shells from the most common ones to the rarest and most expensive pieces. Personally, this is kinda boring but my son had a wonderful time here because all he did the entire time was look at seashells and ask questions about them. I won’t schedule a trip here if it’s not already included in our itinerary. The very cool tree house at the end of the tour is what saved it for me.

2. Bohol Bee Farm

This is not just a bee farm to learn about bees. Yes, you will see live bees but this place offers organic snacks, and my favorite is their very unique ice cream flavors. They have Malunggay (moringa) as well as spicy ginger ice cream. I did not enjoy the spicy ice cream obviously but I’m glad I got to try it. The Malunggay ice cream was a surprise as I didn’t expect to like it but I did. They also serve breakfast, lunch and dinner that are reviewed to be healthy and delicious and you’ll have an amazing ocean view while dining there. We didn’t get to try their meals as we went there after we had our lunch but I’ve heard so much about their Flower Salad. I will probably come back there just to try that.

Before you leave, make sure you buy their honey and other organic products such as honey banana chips which my son and wife love. My wife also bought Malunggay tea which has a lot of health benefits especially if you’re a nursing mother.

3. Before you get inside, you will be greeted by one of their staff members who will give you a quick but informative tour about this spot. According to our tour guide, the cave was accidentally discovered by the owner when he found a hole while clearing bushes and trees. He put a ladder to access the cave and that’s why the area is called Hinagdanan which means laddered.

The path to access the underground cave is quite narrow and slippery so wearing shoes with a good grip is recommended. When you get inside, you’ll see some amazing rock formations made of lime stones. You will also see stalactites and stagalmites sticking out of the ceiling and floors which make for both an eerie and beautiful feel. The sunlight peeking out from the ceiling also adds a nice effect, and our tour guide amazed me that he knew well how to get that nice lighting on the picture even if I only had him use my camera phone. I didn’t know you can actually swim here so we didn’t bring our swimsuits, but the locals said that the water has some powerful healing properties.

There are souvenir shops outside the cave and they sell them for cheap. One of the best smoothies I’ve tried is also sold in one of the stores outside this cave. When you see a lady mixing fruits, milk and ice in one of the stores there, go and order some smoothies. I recommend the mango smoothie which they call mango shake in the Philippines, as well as avocado shake. If you haven’t tried avocado smoothie yet, this is the perfect place to try it --- it will change your life.

4. This is 4-star hotel and resort with fine restaurants inside. I plan on staying here the next time I go to Bohol. Our tour guide/driver was able to make a reservation for us to have dinner here. Please take note that I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time if you’re not a guest in this resort. They usually don’t just let outsiders come in unless they have a reservation or they’re staying in their hotel.

Before we ordered our food, we decided to just bask in the ambience and explore the resort. The setting they have on the beach is just outstanding. The long stretch of white sand beach is the perfect backdrop for the colorful tables and chairs setup everywhere. My son enjoyed building sand castles while my wife and I just sat on their loungers enjoying the sound of waves with drinks in our hands --- man, it was just the perfect paradise vacation.

After a day of exploring Bohol, I decided to just relax in their hammock and that was my favorite spot in this resort.

They have two restaurants on site. First is the Oceanica Seafood Restaurant which is an open air seafood restaurant. Even though it’s open air, you will still be seated indoors but you’ll have a nice view of the ocean.

The second restaurant is the Coast Pool Bar where we decided to go because we were looking to just stay on the beach and wanted just the feel of outdoors dining. Plus, we weren’t really in the mood to have full on dinner entrees which is what Oceanica Seafood Restaurants offers. We only craved tons of appetizers and finger foods while enjoying beers and cocktails. This is a bar, but let me tell you, their food is amazing. If their casual bar offers this kind of food, can you imagine what it’s like eating at their Seafood Restaurant?

The best part of this resort I think was the staff. Their customer service was top-notch, everyone was smiling and courteous. This resort made us feel that we’re in the perfect beach holiday and I give it two thumbs up.

Day 4
1. We had an early breakfast in our hotel.
2. We booked their biggest room since there are 6 people in our party. While checking hotel reviews, I read how some people said the rooms are small. Maybe it depends on the room you will reserve but we booked the one with the ocean view. It wasn’t a suite but we didn’t feel cramped at all. Our room has two queen beds and two twin beds with floor to ceiling glass windows and a balcony.

They also have an infinity pool. Although it doesn’t stretch over to the ocean because of a small forest-like area in the back of the hotel, it’s still exquisite and very relaxing. We went swimming in their pool almost every evening and it was fun every time. Their loungers and chairs by the pool area are all great spots to take amazing pictures, especially during sunrise and sunset.

Where we ate

Aside from the restaurants and dining options mentioned in this Bohol itinerary, we only ate at our hotel because they offer free breakfast buffet which has traditional Filipino and International breakfast items.

For lunch, dinner and snacks, they offer room service if you want to eat inside your room. Now the reason we didn’t really explore too many restaurants outside our hotel is because we’re usually too tired to go out and look for places to eat. But most importantly, the hotel we’re staying in has two very good restaurants. First is the Ocean Café which is their casual restaurant offering stunning views of the sea and Panglao Island. Their breakfast menu comprises of International breakfast selection such as Truffled Eggs Benedict, Banana Nutella Pancakes as well as traditional Filipino breakfast. They only serve mostly Filipino dishes for lunch and dinner.

They also have the more intimate Azure Restaurant offering everything in the Ocean Café plus more intricate seafood dishes and a wide array of cocktails and drinks.

Hiring a Bohol Tour Guide
Now that you’re thinking of going to Bohol when visiting the Philippines, I believe you’re trying to decide whether you’ll do all the sightseeing on your own or you’ll hire a driver/tour guide like we did.

Let me just tell you that hiring Joseph of JPB Bohol Tours is the best decision I made for this Bohol vacation and I highly recommend for you to do the same should you be visiting this scenic island. It was just great not to worry whether I’m driving on the right direction, or which way is better to pass through, etc. I didn’t have to drive and review the maps on this trip and those are enough reasons for me to hire someone to take us places. Remember, this is the Philippines and your dollars will go a long way here. This is not Europe or US where hiring a driver/tour guide will cost you an arm and a leg. The price for this tour depends on the number of people in your party and I paid for two adults and one kid. There were six people in our group so we rode in an L-300 van which can accommodate 10-12 passengers. The more people in your group, the cheaper it will be per person. It is also worth noting that all the entrance to the attractions will already be covered when you hire JPB Bohol Tours.

I can’t really give a quote here as I don’t want to give out any wrong info about tour pricing. It will be better if you contact Joseph of JPB Bohol Tours. But all I can say is that it was cheaper hiring Joseph compared to me and my family going to Disneyland for one day. style="display:block;font-size:90%">

A friend of mine from out of state sent me a message and asked about Venice Canals because he’ll be staying in Venice and he’s looking for things to do around that area. I started to research and I was quite surprised that I never knew about it considering I am in LA at least once a month.

My wife and I already planned to go to Anaheim last weekend so we decided to check out what’s this thing about the Venice Canals. I checked my GPS and it was actually quite easy to get to the area. The first thing I noticed was that it felt I was in a completely different place… nothing about it reminds me of Los Angeles. The canals made it feel like I was in some kind of European city, like I was transported. The lawns and bushes are also well maintained which contributed a lot to the overall nice feel of the neighborhood. Maybe it’s summertime but the flowers are so vibrant here, there's a lot to see and I wasn’t expecting that.

But the best thing about it I think are the houses.

You know when people ask you, “What kind of neighborhood is it?” Usually you can give them a nice picture by describing the houses like, oh that area has tract homes, they have Colonial houses, etc. Not in this area though; each and every house in Venice Canals is unique. I’ve never seen a neighborhood that includes all kinds of houses design-wise. There are a lot of traditional houses, Colonial homes, Spanish style, glass houses, contemporary homes, Arabic-style home, you name it, you’ll find it here. And that’s the real beauty of it. When you think you’ve found a very distinct house, you’ll walk several meters out, and there’s another house that will tickle your fancy.

If you’re a tourist, I want to let you know that this is not some kind of an adventure trip. It’s a peaceful and nice stroll I recommend including at the end of your LA itinerary. The houses are beautiful but not in a grand way. Most are cute and charming and very modest, but keep in mind that the smallest and oldest houses can still cost you around two million US Dollars --- and that’s the cheaper end of the price spectrum. After all, this is Venice and staying here means high-end living.

Also, I just want to note that it was pretty hot last weekend. It was 98 degrees F (37 C) in Los Angeles but when we were in Venice Canals, the temperature was just in the mid 70’s F (24 C) so it was a pleasant day. I’m not sure if it’s because of the canals itself or maybe because the neighborhood is in walking distance from the beach. Either way, the experience made it really delightful.

It is summer in the US right now, which means all tourists attractions are packed. Just to prove my point, my wife and I tried to stop by in Malibu to catch the sunset before heading home but we didn’t find any parking spot after spending a long time stuck in traffic. I understand it is summer time and it’s a Saturday and everyone is at the beach, but there’s barely any tourist when we were in Venice Canals. There were maybe about two families we saw and about three couples, and that’s about it. Most of the people we saw were residents. We have the place pretty much to ourselves so we had an easy time taking pictures.

So, what do you think of Venice Canals, would you come visit here? If you’re going to LA, I highly recommend checking out this area. It’s a breath of fresh air if you’re staying in or around Los Angeles and it’s free! Their people are very careful because the effects on their economy can be huge if a careless visitor accidentally brought in infected items. They have a list of what they call “risk goods” which includes but not limited to fruits, vegetables, meat, cheese and animals (dead or alive).

My wife sometimes doesn’t finish her meals and snacks when we’re on long flights and she always end up taking them with her as we get off the plane. She said she doesn’t have the heart to dispose food especially that there are millions of children starving around the world. She has a very good point actually, so when we went to New Zealand, as expected, she didn’t finish her breakfast which is a plate of sausage, egg and potatoes, she also wasn’t able to eat her chicken sandwich and the snack box they gave us which has chocolates, crackers, granola bar, apple slices, dried fruit and chips was still sealed. She said she’ll eat them when we get to our hotel.

As we were leaving the aircraft, we saw big signs saying food and other risk goods should be disposed. Packaged food is ok but we have to declare it. Cooked food such as the one she has from the aircraft is definitely not allowed. When it’s time to finally toss them out, she gave me the saddest look and I just reminded her she can keep her leftover or we pay the hefty fine. It doesn’t make sense to still try to bring it in because they will confiscate prohibited goods no matter what. There’s really no going around this food policy in New Zealand and the only thing you can do is abide by their rules.

Regarding packaged food, there are some that you can bring in as long as it doesn’t have some ingredients they prohibit like honey. I highly suggest checking New Zealand's customs website for a comprehensive list of items you can't bring.

Declare all risk goods as well as any kind of food you have in your luggage or you will be charged with a $400 fine. My wife had some green tea and unopened cookies in her luggage which she declared and we had no problem in customs.

All in all, it’s just less of a hassle not to bring any food items to New Zealand. The good thing is that there is a large supermarket on the way out of the Auckland airport so you can just get everything you’d be needing there food-wise. If you can’t help but bring in some food essentials, always declare if you are not certain whether what you have in your luggage is allowed or not.

2. Make sure your hiking boots and camping gears are squeaky clean.

Aside from their strict food policy, NZ is very particular about any outdoor gear that has come in contact with nature as this may affect their agricultural industry. When you have these items in your luggage, ALWAYS DECLARE them and you will be directed to a separate line where a customs representative will inspect your items. If these are not clean, they will wash them out for you particularly the sole of your shoes.

There was an elderly couple ahead of us and they look like they’ve been to NZ before because when they were directed to a different line, their boots were in an easily accessible part of their luggage and they were inside a clear plastic bag so the inspector was able to check them in a few seconds.

Unlike my suggestion of not bringing in food because you can easily buy it when you land in New Zealand, I do not recommend purchasing hiking boots or anything similar in this country. I went to check out some of their hiking boots as well as some trail running shoes and they cost double compared to prices in the US.

3. Oncoming traffic is on the left and vehicles are right hand drive.

This can be a challenge at first especially when you’re used to driving on the right hand side of the road. If you’re driving and not really familiar with the road, it will be too easy to get lost. I wasn’t initially planning on renting a GPS as we were picking up our rental car but my wife told me we might have some issues with our internet, and lo behold, we really did have some connection problems especially as we went further out of the city.

I’ve read some articles about others not having a GPS and they didn't have any problem and that’s really cool. This is especially true in the countryside where internet reception is almost non-existent. We have a mobile hotspot (wifi) but the signal was just very weak (although I never had a problem using it in other countries). Thankfully, they have libraries offering unlimited and faster internet connection.

Not having internet connection in some areas especially when we’re out exploring was not really a bad thing because it became the perfect opportunity to disconnect and appreciate the splendor of this country.

8. And it’s true, there have been times we checked the weather the night before and we’re expecting clear skies but then woke up to a very rainy morning. The weather can change from being cold to hot in an instant or vice versa depending on where you are and when you’re visiting. The good thing is that the temperature is not really extreme so outdoor activities can be done whatever the season is.

Ultimately, the weather was really nice when we went April of this year. It was sunny during the day so we’re able to wear shirts, tank tops and shorts. We paid by cash and a few minutes later, the waitress came back saying we paid too much. We told her it’s her tip, and she said we just have to pay the exact amount. We still insisted on her taking the tip, and the Korean waitress was just too embarrassed, she was thanking us nonstop. We were honestly dumbfounded because most people will not turn down a tip. I highly suggest still leaving one if you had a fantastic service, but you’re not obligated to leave a tip in this part of the world.

12. The accent can be tricky.

I noticed that they speak shorter and quicker. Sun rays in this part of the world are quite powerful. Your skin might get burned easier than say you’re out tanning on the beach in another country. To be specific, the peak UV intensities in New Zealand are about 40% greater than other places in Europe that are in similar latitudes.

16. Food can be expensive.

I can’t really say it is super expensive as it is very comparable to food cost in California. A plate at a casual dining restaurant not including sides and drinks costs between 12 – 24 NZD (8.75 – 18.25 USD). It really depends on how you gauge food expense. When I was living in the Philippines I would have thought this to be outrageously expensive. But living in California for more than a decade, I'd consider this slightly above average cost-wise for a casual restaurant. If you’re planning on eating out for every meal, expect a big chunk of your budget going towards food. As with anywhere else, you can keep your food cost down by preparing and making your own meals.

17. They have amazing coffee and they have coffee shops everywhere.

I was initially not a coffee drinker but being married to one made me appreciate good coffee now. We instantly fell in love with it mostly because of the weather. It is rainy and gloomy - the perfect weather for us. We have talked about moving here numerous times because we just felt we belong here. We took our son with us on one of our trips back here a few years ago. This time we checked out some of Seattle’s real estate as the thought of moving in this city gives us some sort of buzz. Maybe some day we will move here. When the kids are all grown up, I see myself living here and enjoying the gloomy, rainy weather of this city. For now, I can only share with you some reasons why Seattle has become our favorite.

1. After living in Southern California for a decade now, my wife and I still can’t get used to most people considering rain as if it’s a natural disaster. People taking out their phones to take pictures and complaining about it on social media is pretty common here. A celebration would finally seem to ensue as soon as the sun comes up --- I still can’t figure this out but this happens all the time.

If you haven’t seen this video, this is exactly how people react when it rains in my town.

2. Most people move to SoCal because they like it sunny. Although there’s a lot of other reasons why I love SoCal, getting too much sun is not one of them. My wife even told me one time that she doesn’t like Summer that much because I get short with her. I never really noticed it but when she told me, I just realized that yes, the hot summer days make me hot tempered. Seattle is the exact opposite of sunny. My wife and I love to take long walks especially when it’s cloudy, and when we were in Seattle, all we did mostly was enjoy long walks.

3. It’s not just a Metropolitan Area.

Pacific Science Center

Yes Seattle is a city, but you’re not limited to just seeing concrete walls all around. Most people who say this I assume are from the warm regions of the country like SoCal, where everyone is friendly and likes to small talk. I never find people in Seattle to be mean nor rude. They’re just not that warm and I don’t see it as a bad thing. When you walk into a store or hop at an Uber, there are times you just don’t want to chat. And this is why not making a lot of small talks in Seattle is something I don’t consider a problem.

5. According to Wikipedia, people spend an average of $36 per month on coffee in this city. The first Starbucks location is in Seattle and this store in Pike Place is a tourist spot on its own, but it is also important to note that there are other very good (mostly better) coffee shops in this city. Walking through the streets of Seattle, I’ve realized that it is nearly impossible not to see at least one coffee shop in every block. If you love coffee, you will be in heaven living here.

I know some people who don't share the same views as mine and that's totally fine.
